Announcement: News Feeds!

I created this for personal use, but then decided to improve it and share it with the rest of you: Newsfeeds from several shell and customisation sites. Definitely worth a bookmark and a daily visit no?

A few notes - it's just a start. I'd like to have feeds there from every appropriate site. If you've got a site in mind, let me know. (First verify that the site does have a backend though.)

The page refreshes every 15 minutes, and tells you when it was last updated. As well, links open in a new browser window (unlike most other links on this site). Have fun with it, don't be too critical (it's supposed to be very simple), and contribute what you can!

For something covering other areas, and with some more features, I recommend The Daily Rotation.

The feeds here are very specific, and will cover personal and less frequently updated sites. Ok, enough rambling, here you go:

Hmm - that's pretty interesting. I agree that it'd be good to *at least*
filter exact duplicates. As for sorting - the news posts don't exactly
have dates do they?

One could make a stack and take the first item from each feed, then continue recursively -- but that's not really right either. Will give it some more thought.

PHP has functions to calculate the similarity of strings. Perhaps one could use that. If two news items seem alike and are from roughly the same date, chances are that it's about the same thing. At any rate, a lot of newsposts are exact duplicates, so you could filter those out anyway. But then how would you display the items?

But would it be solid? Sure, you could filter out news items with the same title -- but what if it's slightly different. And how different would it have to be to be filtered?

I'd definitely like to see it done though!

Cool. Say hello to extra traffic. :P

As for what crae said, it could be done, just would be complex.

I agree .. there's too much duplication of news across sites. I can't think of a foolproof way to do away with that though. One could clump them all together and sort them - but then how do you decide what to delete and what not to?

In the final analysis, it's perhaps better to leave the duplicates because different sites just might give different perspectives on a certain news item. Comments welcome.

I have been thinking of creating such a thing for Tek. While it's great to get all your headlines listed from the various sites (saves a lot of time), the trouble with these things is that it's grouped per site. The way I see it it would be pure news grouped by date, with duplicate news posts filtered out. Not sure how it would "feel" though.

Hi West - I did a while back, if it's a recent one - I haven't been checking regularly. My flat's been totally flooded from a burst pipe - so life is a bit disrutped at the moment.

I think I'll implement a "keyword" for this site, so you'll have to start your comment with ... say "shells" ... I'll strip that and post your comment.

Hopefully that will keep the spammers at bay.
