logo competition
The logo contest is now over. There were some excellent entries, and it was quite hard to decide. The winning logo is that one above, created by Lowspirit. Congratulations to him!

A hearty thanks to all the contributors as well (see below for their submissions). There's a lot of good work on this page, and it would be a shame if most of these stayed here and never saw the light of day again. As a way to give these budding artists a bit of exposure, we'll feature some of these logos in upcoming issues of Shell-Shocked.

If you'd like to contribute a logo for an upcoming issue, that opportunity will remain open. Feel free to follow the guidelines below and send them on at any time.

If you'd like to link to Shell-Shocked on your site, you may use any graphic on this page - whichever you fancy. The official ones are by Lowspirit.

Some other contests to look forward to include the upcoming "Shell-Shocked Theme" contest in which you must design a theme (using any shell) matching the site's design. As well, there'll be the opportunity to design upcoming magazine issues. All very exciting stuff, no?

These were the rules:

Rules:
  1. Copyright: Logos will remain the property of their original designers (so that means you can pull the logo from the site if you really wanted to).

  2. Deadline: Friday June 14th. (A running time of two weeks.)

  3. Size: Length: 440 pixels, Width: 60-80 pixels.

  4. Format: PNG preferably (but who really cares).

  5. Each logo must be accompanied by a matching button.

  6. You may enter as many times as you wish. If you'd like to alter or update your submission, that's ok - just send me the updated version and I'll add/replace it here.

  7. Use the hyphen in the name "shell-shocked". Note as well the past tense (shocked, and not shock).

  8. Optional: Write a few notes about your logo. See below for examples.

  9. Contact me for details on where to send submissions.

Tips:
  • I rather like the site's colour scheme, so something that looks good with it will be a plus. In particular, the grey background of this box won't change - the icons are coloured to blend in with it and there's no way in hell I'm going to alter them all again!

  • Round edges look better with the site.

  • If it fits with your design, it might be a good idea to have the site's address "http://shell-shocked.org" somewhere on it. If not, don't bother.

Notes:

All you'll probably get for making a logo, is a lot of credit. (You'll have my eternal gratitude as well, but that's perhaps not so useful.) You may have email sent to <username>@shell-shocked.org forwarded to an address of your choice.

There's the satisfaction of having your work on the site. This site just might get a lot of traffic. Heck, you'll be famous (that's debatable). If you don't make the best logo, at least your submission will remain here forever.

Though it's unlikely, I'd like to reserve the right to select more than one logo. I might write a script to cycle between them, or randomly select one of them when a page loads. Or just change them google style.

Now on to the submissions ... some excellent work by very talented people (with the exception of mine of course)!

Simple design born of my boredom and a need to give something to the community. Background is a striped blues swirled with a cloud cover produced by alienware's xenofex plugin for Photoshop. The bomb is obviously from the shell of shell-shocked. The line is more on the wartime effect of bombs with a shell twist.

Hmm. Well I made this out of desperation pretty much. People were coming to the site, and I just had an ugly text banner up there. It took me a while, slow computer and all. I used Paint Shop Pro and learned a little bit in the process.

The lightening is obvious - "shocked". I tried to use part of the lightening to provide the hyphen in "shell-shocked". Here's the effect I was going for: You're standing out in the rain during a thunderstorm. Broad daylight but horrible weather. The sun peeks out from the corner. Your glasses are a bit wet. You see words floating in mid-air. You're totally wasted.

About first logo:
From the chatbox:
:: [Brian] You really do need a nice logo though. I'm afraid I'm of no use there - I hack words rather than pixels =)

:: [eriol] Well, I'm quite the opposite of Brian here - I'm no good with words, not even the simplest of descriptions...

About second logo:
This one is just plain weird, it's a mishmash of ideas thrown together - if there are parts ppl like I can filter out those ideas for a separate logo. (Easier like this than multiple submissions... :p)

Um, well I figured why not have the logo match the site almost to a "T". So that's what I did. I added my own little additions like shadow, texture, mission statement, and anything else the site didn't have. So here you are, but please... don't laugh... :^)

UPDATE:

OK OK... I got bored, so me and my graphical talents (more like lack thereof) did a modification on the original piece I did.. I call it.. "Please don't Laugh....again..."

Logo layout stolen from Dra'Kon's design but modifyed slightly. It's a little taste of whats to come. If Dra'Kon doesnt want me to take credit for this, I'll understand. :)

Just a simple Gimp produced logo and matching button. Simplicity at it's best but looks cool. Hope you like it.

First:
The button and banner were based on a logo I created for your site. I kept it as blue and bright as possible. The logo exists of a shell and a 'blitz' to represent a shock. You'll have to take a look at it to see what I mean. BTW: This is not even close to the Shell Industries logotype. I'm a graphics designer in reallife, I know about logo copyrights - this one is 100% safe.

Second:
The button and banner are simply built out of the current site's frame... the only shocking thing may be the flashing shell-shock thingy. Nothing special, but since I allready sent in my 10 cents, here's another 2 cents that took me about 6 minutes before leaving office.

I originally created the static png versions first for minimal file size at same color and design use as your site... but then, I started to play a bit. Now, I just can't decide which one to send in, so I sent both.

I think I'll implement a "keyword" for this site, so you'll have to start your comment with ... say "shells" ... I'll strip that and post your comment.

Hopefully that will keep the spammers at bay.
